Ep 73: Pastor Teddy's Musical Voyage and Spiritual Insights (Part 1)
"Can you remember listening to the radio DJ’s of old tell stories between songs? With today’s streaming, we don’t always get the radio experience from back in the day. Today, Pastor Teddy shares music and stories on Plays on Word Radio like an old DJ."
How does an old man reminiscing about his youth in Babylon illuminate our understanding of faith and memory? Pastor Teddy, also known as Fred David Kenney Jr., invites us into his world of music and storytelling on Plays on Word Radio. From his humble beginnings with makeshift recording setups to the professional lessons learned under the guidance of producer Edison Sandsbury, Pastor Teddy shares a journey filled with passion, technical growth, and heartfelt inspiration. His admiration for the legendary Keith Green and the collaborative tunes from their theatrical plays paint an enlightening picture of his musical evolution, promising an episode that's both nostalgic and educational.
As we turn the pages of life's journey, themes of aging and divine presence come alive through a poignant story set in ancient Babylon through the song "Boy in Babylon." Pastor Teddy uncovers the profound connections between our past memories and present faith, offering comfort and strength that transcend time. This reflective chapter encourages listeners to appreciate the divine guidance in their lives, emphasizing that God's unwavering presence is a constant, whether in youth or old age. It's a powerful reminder to look back with gratitude and forward with enduring faith.
In a heartfelt celebration of Christ and His intervention, we shine the spotlight on The Music of Plays On Word. We give a shout-out to Rocco, a gifted saxophonist from the 'CHRISTMAS JOE' tour, and Teddy's recording studio teacher, Lee Weisert, at Manasquan High. Through stirring tracks like "There's No Other Name" and a touching song from the perspective of the prodigal son's father, we explore themes of salvation and joyous reunions. The episode culminates in the joy of answered prayers, leaving listeners with a sense of gratitude and a deeper connection to their faith. Join us for an episode that promises to inspire and uplift, filled with stories, music, and the undeniable presence of God.

Lord, you know you listen on the place of word. Radio is the best. You can relate to that a little bit right, looking back and just reminiscing a little bit and remembering that the Lord is with you or was with you then, as he's with you now. The same Lord, he's been with us. Man, you live long enough and live and walk with God. Man, it's so nice to look back and say you don't age, lord, I do, but you don't. Your big name, your big name, your big name.
Speaker 2:Hello and welcome to Plays on Word Radio, where we discuss, analyze, work and play on the Word of God. Thank you for joining us on this excursion. Today let's join Pastor Teddy, also known as Fred David Kenny Jr, the founder of Plays on Word Theater, as he does a deep dive into the Word of God.
Speaker 1:Yes, yes, yes. Thank you very much, mr Josh Taylor and Katie Kenny. Welcome to all you listening to Plays on Word Radio. We are back, that's right. Today we're going to do something a little special for you. I'm going to get my Wolfman Jack or Casey Kasem on. If you, those old heads, would understand that. You young heads have no idea what I'm talking about. But today is a music episode. We're going to rock some of the tunes from the plays and some of the tunes from the albums and, yeah, we're going to.
Speaker 1:Just what happened was the reason we did the first album was a lot of people would come up to me after the play and they would say one of the things I would always get specifically after a Genesis Joe play. People would say, hey, have you ever listened to Keith Green? You know you remind me of Keith Green and you know I take that as a major compliment. Keith Green, for those of you that know. You know. Those of you that don't know, you need to check him out. He died way too young, a Christian artist, and yeah, he was the real deal, but he had some unique chord changes. That whole period from the late 60s through the early 80s was some serious songwriting, chord progressions and stuff like that, and so I took it as a compliment. But people would come up after the play and they would say, hey, where can I get these songs? They sound great. And I was like, well, you know, I had a recording studio over 20 some years ago in Philadelphia and I've always had a recording studio. I had a recording.
Speaker 1:My first recording studio I had I think it was basically man, if you think about it I took two boom boxes and put them back together I like put them back to back so I'd record on one and I recruited my brother, and then, at another point I think, I recruited my other brother, ben, but mostly it was me and Mike and we would record. I'd play keyboards or guitar or bass or something and he would play drums and we would record one pass and then we'd play the cassette back and record again on top of that with another boombox. So we're playing what we recorded and then we would play additional stuff on top of it. So we were, and you can do that until you get to a point where there's so much noise that it's just like it makes no sense. But that was before we had multitrack.
Speaker 1:And then when I got to high school, my mind was blown because they had an eight-track reel-to-reel. Mr Weisert was overseeing the recording studio. I couldn't believe it. Yeah, man, it was a real legit recording studio and I learned more about recording there. I would God bless Mr Weiser If you're listening to this, lee, god bless you, man. He would let me go in there on, during, during study hall and during during my lunch. A lot of times I didn't even eat lunch, I just be like, you know, I got to pass, I got to go down to the music room and they let me go down to the music room and I would blow stuff up. I was there, man. I was like, oh, don't want to do that again, turning stuff up, getting feedback, uh, erasing stuff by accident. But I was learning how to properly record and engineer, and so then I got some gear at my house. My dad God bless his soul he bought us some gear and then later, late teens, I even took out a loan from the bank. I think it was like my first loan.
Speaker 1:I got my own recording 8-track reel-to-reel. My brother Ben still has it. It's out in California. I just recently came across a bunch of not cassettes, the Ampex 456 reels, something special about that tape. When you open up the box and smell it, oh man, it's just creativity. And those of you that know what I'm talking about, you know what I'm talking about. The new heads have no idea because everything's digital now. But there was something special about new tape and so, yeah, I mean I've always had recording studio and then I worked in New York, basically apprenticed under Edison Sandsbury, yeah, and he's a legitimate, real deal producer and he taught me the art of production and engineering. He's an awesome engineer, excellent engineer and an excellent producer. He understands, like the big picture and yeah, so I learned so much from him and that experience being up in New York. And then I upgraded my studio again and I had all kinds of Anyway, I'm rambling, but we ended up becoming halfway decent engineer and halfway decent producer.
Speaker 1:And most of these songs I think I engineered. I know I engineered on them my buddy Carmine. I brought him in for a couple songs to assist on that and let's see what else did we? I might have brought a couple instrumentalists in. My buddy Randy came in, phil Sinclair came in for a couple songs, but what we're going to do is we are going to rock steady here. This is a Plays on Word radio special music program and our first tune is going to be from the Genesis Joe play and this was a pure joy to record the song and to record the video. I wish you could have seen my wife's face when I came upstairs and showed her the video. I was recording it with two iPhones down in the studio in the basement. I had a basement studio at my house. She didn't know what I was doing and I came up and I played it for her. She was like what she was like this is great.
Speaker 1:And then she was like, then the artist of her kicked in. Those of you that know, katie, can I get an amen? And she was like, all it needs is just a couple, a couple adjustments. I was like, oh man, I thought it was done. But so she came back downstairs and we did some color correcting, some tones and stuff like that. So I made the adjustments.
Speaker 1:Katie helped me with that. I'm a good video editor. I just basically applied my music approach to video and I can put videos together, tell the story, get it framed right and everything, but the color correcting aspect. I mean, katie understands these different colors. I'm like you know what color is that? I'm like that's blue. No, no, that's periwinkle. She's got all these different, different names for all these different colors. Where I'm just like basic, I'll give you seven or eight colors. Anyway, that's what my beautiful wife is excellent at. So those of you that saw this video that's her on the color correction and me in the studio Check it out for me.
Speaker 1:So many valleys that I've been through, so many mountaintops you took me to. Oh Lord, how I thank you for the day you've made. You've made, you've made it's today. It's the day that the Lord has made. He's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. Yeah, yeah, today is the day that the Lord has made, he's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. Now I don't dwell on where I've been. I'm pressing into where I'm going, I'm living my life as he's showing me the way. Oh yeah, and though this life has taken me Through ups and downs, sometimes it's shaking me, I know that you've been with me all the way. I know that you've been with me every day. Today is the day that the Lord has made. He's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. Yeah, yeah, today is the day that the Lord has made, he's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. Oh yes, he has brand-new soul. Oh yes, he has. Oh yes, he has. I want to thank you For giving me hope, giving me dreams. Lord, I do, lord, I do. I believe that, through all my darkest days, that you were with me every day, through all my darkest days, that you were with me every day. So I do so, I do, I do say Trust in the Lord, trust in His name and know that this is the day he made. Yes, it is, yes, it is. Today is the day that the Lord has made, he's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. It's the day that the Lord has made, he's taken away everything that was wrong and given to me a brand new soul. Today was the day that the Lord has made, he's taken away everything that was wronged and given to me. Give in to me, give in to me, give in to me. New song yeah, amen, yeah. That is from the Genesis Joe play and that is the finale song to Genesis Joe. And as we get back into our Bible study at some point very soon, we will play that at the appropriate time for you again, and if we have time today, we might even play the dance remix. Yes, we do dance remixes even too. So, yeah, that is a song, but we're going to continue with this music episode of Plays on Word Radio, and this tune is from the upcoming Dan play. That's right, from Daniel Looking back.
Speaker 1:Y'all, I was young.
Speaker 1:I once was strong. This life was hard, but we carried on and on and on, and I still see the light up ahead of me, but now I'm old, feel like I've lived so long. When I last looked, all my youth was gone, like a melody from a long lost song, it just slipped away. I remember back when I was just a boy in Babylon, when I was young and this life was just like the morning, just like the sunrise, like the night at dawn. I was just a boy, a boy in Babylon. How I'd often think then. What would come to be. Looking forward from that time, I could not see. Would I change Babylon or would it change me in some way? And looking back now, I can't say for sure. Was the time spent worth it with the working door?
Speaker 1:Tell me, do you think anyone will remember what we did, lord, when I was just a boy in Babylon, when I was young and this life was just like the morning, just like the sunrise. Like the morning, just like the sunrise, like the light at dawn. I was just a boy, a boy in Babylon. Oh, it seems like the people that I used to know Then are gone. They're all gone. I'm still here and, oh, how I miss them sometimes. Oh, I know this life keeps going on and on, and on, and on and on, I'll be strong. When I was young, when I was strong, sometimes it was hard, but I carried on and on and on, and I'd always see your light up ahead of me, looking at me. Now I can say for sure your work will last forever, because you endure Forever and ever and ever and ever. You'll never slip away, and I know that you've been with me ever since I was just a boy, when I was young, and this life was just like the morning.
Speaker 1:Just like the sunrise like the light at dawn.
Speaker 1:I was just a boy, a boy in Babylon, and I was just a boy when I was young in this life, just like the sunrise, I was just a boy, a boy in Babylon. That's right, this is WPOWR. I don't know what the W's for, but I guess we're this side of the Mississippi, but plays on Word Radio. That's right, welcome back. That song, yes, is part of the Dan play. He's looking back, he's an old man and he's just reminiscing about the time when he was brought to Babylon and what it was like. And would he change Babylon or would it change him? Yeah, a lot of you, old people, you can relate to that a little bit. Right, looking back and just reminiscing a little bit and remembering that the Lord is with you, or was with you then, as he's with you now, is with you or was with you then, as he's with you now. This same Lord, he's been with us, man, if you live long enough and live and walk with God, man, it's so nice to look back and say you don't age, lord, I do, but you don't, and you were with me, thank you, and I can look back and see your hand upon me, lord, oh, hallelujah, I can see your hand. Looking back now, I see so clear. I couldn't at the time, lord, but thank you for being faithful to me. Those of you that are old and know what I'm talking about, can I get an amen? Those of you that are young, or maybe young in Christ? You will be able to At some point. You log a few more hours and you'll be able to look back Because God is faithful, he is trustworthy and he is good. And when we look back we're going to say, oh hall, hallelujah, amen, amen, amen.
Speaker 1:This next song goes out to my man, rocco, in addition to all of you. But my man Rocco loves this song. He plays with us on our Christmas Joe tour. Rocco plays the saxophone, although he's not limited to that instrument, and we might have to incorporate him on either guitar or piano coming up this next season. But, my man Rocco, this is for you, bro.
Speaker 1:The Lamb who was slain to receive power, salvation in His name, all glory and honor, white in wisdom, just the same. There's no other. There's no other. There's no other name. There's no other name. I tell you there's no other name. There's no other name. There's no other name. There's no other name. He appeared in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, claimed among the nations, taken up in glory. There's no other way. There's no other way, there's no other way. No, no, no. There's no other way. You gotta know. I tell you there's no other way. There is nothing like, there is nothing like. There is nothing like the name, the name of Jesus. Great and amazing are your deeds, oh Lord God, almighty deeds. Oh lord God almighty, just and true are your ways. Oh, king of nations, king of nations, you're the only name Jesus. You're the only name Jesus. You're the only name Jesus. We know that You're the only name Jesus. There's no other name. Yours is the only name Jesus. We know that You're the only name.
Speaker 2:Yours is the only name given to men and women. Yours is the only thing which I'm forgiving. Now we're living. Now we're living. Amen.
Speaker 1:And many of you know that as the Plays Onward radio theme song as well. That is from Volume 2, the Volume 2 album. That's a bonus track on the Volume 2 album. We are going to continue with a song from the prodigal son here, and it's from the dad's perspective. And it's from the dad's perspective.
Speaker 1:Are my hopes and dreams now come true? Did you hear me? Could it be that you've heard me? Could it be you've answered my prayer After all my crying out to you? Could it be that you do care? Could it be that you've reached down and done the impossible? Could it be you were me? Could it be?
Speaker 1:All this time I've been praying, lord, let the signs lead right back to me Over and over. I asked surely you can make it. So I asked Lord, you're the most high and still you. Let me see with my own eyes Answers to my prayers and my cries. Oh, lord, is this what I see? Oh, could it be. Could it be, could it be that you heard me? Could it be you answered my prayer after all my crying after you? Could it be that you do? Could it be that You've reached down and done the impossible? Could it be? Oh, could it be. And though You're on your throne still, you were here with me and, as I made it known, yes, you were listening To me.
Speaker 1:Now, with my own eyes, I have clearly seen the answers to my prayer. You were listening To me. You were listening to me and now, as I run, step by step, I can't help but cry Because of joy, filling my heart again, filling my heart again. Over there on the horizon. It's my prodigal one that I'm gonna embrace with love again. Thank you for showing me and thank you for hearing me.
Speaker 1:Now I know that answered my prayer, after all my crying out. Now I know that you do care. Now I know that You've reached down and done the impossible. It could be, yeah, oh, it could be. Oh, it could be. Oh, it could be. Now I know that you heard me. Now I know you answered my prayer and, after all my crying out, you do care. Now I know that you reached out. Oh, and it can be. Oh, it can be. Yeah, it can be. Yeah, man, that's going to be a good video. We're working on that video. That's all the time we got today, but we're going to continue this next time. Until then, the Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord, make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
